President Obama’s backing for same-sex marriage has brought impassioned and predictable responses.

Conservative Christians called it “saddening” and “disappointing”.

Others are delighted. One gay pastor said she was “giddy with joy”.

Reactions differ around the country. It changes little in New York where gay marriage is already legal.

“I think that’s a great thing. I think that people should have the freedom to love whoever they want to love and express that through marriage,” said one young New York woman.

An older man responded: “My reaction is he’s pandering to anybody who will vote for him.”

The question now is: to what extent will Obama’s the support for same-sex marriage become a presidential election issue?
