Gritty reality comes to Cannes

Hollywood glamour came to the 65th annual Cannes Film Festival on Tuesday in the shape of
A-lister Brad Pitt.

However, his latest film, “Killing Them Softly”, directed by Andrew Dominik, paints a bleak picture of the broken American dream.

It blends a violent but comic gangster story with criticism of politicians’ failure to grapple with the economic crisis.

In complete contrast “ The Angel’s Share” was described by critics as purely pleasurable.

In a rare comedy for him, director Ken Loach combines Scottish charm with his own gritty message about a Glasgow delinquent who finds a way out through whisky.

“It’s part of the tourist view of Scotland: the whisky, the highlands, Edinburgh Castle and shortbread. We had a little fun in contrasting the two images of Scotland, the tourist view and reality,” said Loach.

Cannes finishes Sunday with the Palme d’Or selection from the jury headed by Nanni Moretti.
