Differences remain after Iran nuclear talks in Baghdad

After two days of talks in Baghdad over Iran’s disputed nuclear programme, it seems world powers have made little headway in resolving the main sticking points.

Russia described the talks as constructive, while EU policy chief Catherine Ashton said substantial differences remain.

“All of the parties held serious and useful discussions focusing on the Iranian nuclear issue. China will continue to promote talks and peace – and to play a constructive role in the settlement of the issues through peaceful means,” said Ma Zhaoxu, China’s representative.

The United States and other nations suspect the goal of Iran’s nuclear programme is a nuclear weapon.

Tehran says it has the right to enrich uranium and that its aims are peaceful.

Major powers have imposed sanctions on Iran’s energy and financial sectors and say they will only be eased if enrichment activities are halted.
