Striking Greek journalists cause news blackout

Greek journalists staged a 24-hour strike on Monday. The walkout stopped all TV and radio broadcasts and halted updates on many internet news portals. No newspapers will be printed on Tuesday.

The journalists are angry about pay cuts and rising unemployment. They are also pressing for the signing of collective wage contracts.

“It is not only us that are losing from this strike but also the public because news is priceless. We are trying to make everyone understand that with poor and uninsured workers, there can be no news and the country cannot function without it,” said
Dimitris Trimis, President of the Greek Journalists’ Union.

“We’re trying to reach a compromise to rescue mass media, based on making them independent and giving rights across the board to reporters, technicians and administrative personnel,” he continued.
