Annan to hold crucial talks with Assad after Houla massacre

Amateur footage has been broadcast said to have been filmed as Friday’s massacre in the Syrian town of Houla unfolded.

The Syrian government has denied its troops played any role in the killing of at least 100 people. They’ve blamed Islamists.

But the UN says heavy weaponry was used which only the Syrian army possess.

It is why Peace Envoy Kofi Annan is in Damascus for talks today with Syria’s president saying he had come at a critical moment in the crisis.

“I urge the government to take bold steps to signal that it is serious in its intention to resolve this crisis peacefully; and for everyone involved to help create the right context for a credible political process,” said Annan.

Yesterday Annan urged Syria to implement his six-point peace plan, the first two – a ceasefire and troop withdrawal have obviously not been complied with. At today’s talks it’s difficult to see what more Annan can achieve, a political transition appearing to be impossible.
