Poland has complained after US President Barack Obama slipped up during a ceremony to honour a dead World War II hero.

Obama described what he called a “Polish death camp” during the posthumous award of the Medal of Freedom for Jan Karski.

The phrasing is considered hugely offensive because of Nazi Germany’s invasion of Poland, where the majority of concentration camps were set up.

Karski was a key resistance fighter who alerted the world the Nazi Holocaust, where some 6 million European Jews were slaughtered.

Polish President Donald Tusk has demanded an apology by saying that: “It’s as if there were no Nazis, no Germany responsibility, no Hitler.”
