Prince Phillip’s absence overshadows Queen’s concert

Britain’s Queen Elizabeth joined rock royalty and members of her family on stage after a star- studded concert for her Diamond Jubilee.

Afterwards her son, Prince Charles thanked the artists and paid tribute to the concert organisers. But there was one reservation:

“The only sad thing about this evening is that my father couldn’t be here with us. Because unfortunately he is taken unwell. But ladies and gentlemen if we shout loud enough he might just hear us in hospital.”

Prince Phillip’s unexpected bladder infection overshadowed proceedings but in the age old tradition the show went on.

Huge crowds had waited all day for the concert featuring performers young and old who sang to mark Queen Elizabeth’s 60-year reign.

At the end she lit the last of more than 4,000 beacons which had been constructed and set alight around the UK and across the Commonwealth.

A spectacular fireworks brought a jubilant evening to an end. But at today’s thanksgiving service in St Paul’s Cathedral the Queen will be there without her husband by her side who is to remain in hospital for the next few days.
