Falkland Islands to hold referendum

Falkland Islanders are set to hold a referendum on their political status next year, a move aimed at bolstering international diplomatic support for British sovereignty of the islands.

The referendum plan which comes at a time of tension surrounding the 30-year-anniversary of the Falklands war, is said to have been initiated by the islanders themselves. British Prime Minister David Cameron – who has criticised Argentina for trying to shout down the voices of the islanders – said that he will support the result of the referendum, and support the islanders for as long as they want to remain British.
