Aung San Suu Kyi finally makes Nobel acceptance speech

Twenty-one years after being awarded the Nobel Peace Prize, Myanmar’s pro-democracy icon Aung San Suu Kyi has made her acceptance speech.

The 66-year-old opposition leader travelled to Norway’s capital Oslo, making her first trip to Europe in 24 years.

She has spent much of the past two decades under house arrest ordered by Myanmar’s military rulers.

“As you look at me and listen to me, please remember the often repeated truth that one prisoner of conscience is one too many,” she told the guests at Oslo City Hall.

“Those who have not yet been freed, those who have not yet been given access to the benefits of justice in my country number much more than one. Please remember them and do whatever is possible to affect their earliest unconditional release,” she concluded to a round of applause.

Her son Alexander Aris made the original acceptance speech in 1991, dedicating the prize to the people of Myanmar who had sacrificed their lives in the struggle for democracy.
