WikiLeaks founder Assange seeks Ecuador asylum

WikiLeaks’ founder Julian Assange has made a plea for asylum in Ecuador after seeking refuge at the South American nation’s embassy in London. It is unclear how he arrived there.

Britain’s Supreme Court ruled last week that he could be extradited to Sweden where he is wanted for questioning over rape allegations.

Speaking at a press conference in Ecuador’s capital Quito, Foreign Minister Ricardo Patino said: “The government of Ecuador is evaluating the request from Julian Assange and whatever decision it takes regarding him will take into account respect for the norms and principles of international law, just as Ecuador’s traditional policies are sensitive to human rights.”

This situation may cause tension between the left-wing government in Quito and Washington, who accuse Assange of damaging America’s foreign relations.
