The health of Egypt’s former president Hosni Mubarak remains shrouded in mystery.

The 84-year-old was pronounced “clinically dead” on Tuesday by state media, a claim hotly disputed by the ruling military council.

Mubarak, who governed the country for 30 years, was moved from Tora Prison, where he is serving a life sentence, to a nearby military hospital for treatment.

Prison sources say Mubarak’s heart stopped beating and Nile TV claimed he had suffered a stroke.

The former leader has been hampered by breathing problems and severe depression since he was ousted from power on 11 February last year.
