EU imposes new round of sanctions on Syria

EU foreign ministers meeting in Luxembourg have agreed fresh sanctions against individuals linked to Syrian President Bashar al-Assad.

The latest punitive measures are thought to include asset freezes and visa bans on one person and six companies.

EU ministers also urged restraint from Turkey after the shooting down of one of its military jets.

“We have to continue to ratchet up the pressure on the Syrian regime and we want to see united action by the Security-Council including comprehensive sanctions. We condemn the unacceptable shooting down of a Turkish military plane by Syria on Friday,” EU foreign policy chief Catherine Ashton said.

Despite the EU’s growing sanctions list, violence in Syria has increased over the past month, where Assad has been trying to suppress a 16-month revolt.
