Obama visits Colorado to inspect wildfire damage

US President Barack Obama has been to Colorado Springs visiting neighborhoods ravaged by wildfires.

Describing the blazes as a “major disaster” Obama toured areas affected, taking in devastation that includes the destruction of nearly 350 homes.

“We have been putting everything we have into trying to deal with what is one of the worst fires we’ve seen here in Colorado and it’s still early in the fire season. We’ve still got a lot more work to do,” he said.

The fire has been raging since last weekend, fueled by hot, arid conditions and winds of over 100km per hour.

Since Thursday, winds have dropped, allowing firefighters to make more headway.

Officials have called this wildfire season the most destructive in the history of the state.

Thirty-five thousand people have been evacuated and the bodies of two victims of the blazes have been found.
