A passenger jet bound for Madrid has been forced to return to New York, after suspicious wires inside plastic straws were found in an onboard toilet.

The Delta Air Lines plane, a Boeing 767, landed safely at John F. Kennedy airport on Thursday night, around 90 minutes after taking off.

Bomb experts examined the aircraft and no explosives were found. Two passengers were questioned, but neither was held.

Delta described the situation as a “security concern” without elaborating. The airline said the plane returned to New York out of an abundance of caution.
