UN officials investigate atrocity in Tremseh

UN observers in Syria are heading to the village of Tremseh to investigate the alleged massacre in which opposition activists say more than 200 people were killed on Thursday.

According to the UN a patrol of unarmed observers could only get within about 6 km of Tremseh before being stopped by Syrian military commanders.

There are no independent accounts of the number dead or how they were killed but this amateur footage appears to shows scores of dead bodies.

Russian has condemned the attacks but remain opposed to any moves to threaten further sanctions but the spokesman of the Syrian National Council, George Sabra blames Moscow for the atrocity.

He said: “We hold Russia responsible for the Tremseh massacre and the other massacres because now it is part of the problem and not part of the solution, and it is obvious that this Russian policy will now destroy the historical good relationship between the Syrian people and Russia.”

The UN have confirmed that government forces used tanks and helicopters during the attack, in violation of a commitment given to UN and Arab League special envoy Kofi Annan.

Mr Annan has reacted angrily to the killings.

He is expected to meet Russian Foreign Minister Sergei lavrov on Monday.
