Canada: 2 dead in Toronto party shooting

Two people have been killed after a shooting at an outdoor party in Toronto.

Bullets were fired from a number of guns into a crowd of about 200 people.

Nineteen people, including a young child under the age of three, suffered gunshot wounds and other injuries caused by the ensuing panic.

The two victims were a teenage girl and a man believed to be in his early twenties.

Police say they are holding one “person of interest”, but are appealing to public for information on other suspects.

“I’ve been a cop for 35 years and this is the worst incident of gun violence in my memory anywhere in North America… We’ve had officers sent from right across the city to assist in this investigation. We’ll be bringing a lot of resources to bear on this because it’s the most serious crime of its kind that’s ever taken place in the city of Toronto,” said Toronto Police Chief Bill Blair.

The incident happened during a barbecue at around 11 o’clock in the evening local time.

It is believed an argument broke out, leading to different people firing weapons.

People were rushed for emergency treatment to a number of hospitals across the city, whilst those with minor injuries were treated in ambulances.
