UN report reveals number of Syria refugees has almost tripled

As British Foreign Secretary William Hague visits Syrian refugees in Jordan, a United Nations report reveals the number of people who have fled the violence has almost tripled since April.

William Hague toured a refugee camp in northern Jordan where he met people affected by the crisis, including one woman who cried out that “sons were being killed and women were having their honour disgraced”.

“It is terrible to hear the accounts of what has been happening from people here, many of them have come from close by over the border, from Deraa for instance. There are accounts of bombardment from the air, the use of every kind of heavy weaponry against the civilian population,” Hague said.

According to the UN’s refugee organisation, UNHCR, there are 112,000 Syrian refugees registered in Iraq, Jordan, Lebanon and Turkey. Most of them are women and children.

The actual figure may be higher as not all displaced people have registered.
