The heaviest rainfall to hit China in 60 years has claimed the lives of at least 10 people.

The storm started on Saturday afternoon and continued throughout the evening, leaving major roads in Beijing flooded.

State media have reported that nearly 15,000 people, mostly in outlying districts, have been evacuated.

Hundreds swamped the capital’s subway system, which was largely unaffected, as they tried to get home.

More than 500 flights were cancelled at Beijing’s International Airport, leaving aound 80,000 people stranded.

Meteorologists have warned that there could be more extreme weather on the way.
