Syria: battle for Aleppo rages on

The battle for control of Syria’s largest city continues, with rebels claiming they have regained ground in a crucial district of Aleppo.

Part of the Old City, a UNESCO World Heritage site, has been damaged by bombing, according to opposition forces.

Syrian state television reported success in repelling a rebel attack on Aleppo airport.

Fighting appears to be fiercest around the district of Salaheddin, from where rebels made what they called a “tactical withdrawal” on Thursday.

Shelling by government forces targeted the eastern Aleppo district of Saif al-Dawla, the western neighbourhoods of Bustan al-Qasr and Al-Masharaqa.

Unrest continues in other parts of Syria, with reports of two explosions in Damascus and the British-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights claiming at least 21 people have been killed on Saturday.

As refugees continue to flee into neighbouring countries, Friday night saw clashes between Syrian troops said to be firing at them and Jordanian troops in the border region.
